EU, US Seek to Renew Mideast Talks

The EU, the US, and Israel in particular are nervous over the Palestinian Authority's intention to go to the UN for a Palestinian state recognition in September.

EU Parliament President met separately with the Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian caretaker PM Salam Fayyad on Tuesday in a bid to push both parties to resume talks and accept the EU peace plan.

On Wednesday, top US Middle East envoy Dennis Ross met Netanyahu for the same reason.

Ross who echoed the Israeli position, said that in order for talks to restart between Palestinians and Israelis, the Palestinians must recognize the idea of two states for two peoples., meaning that the Palestinians must recognize Israel as a Jewish state, fundamental to Netanyahu and a no go for the Palestinians.

US adviser David Hale at a meeting with Fayyad said Palestinian goals will only be achieved through talks with Israel, and that the US will not support the Palestinians' plan to unilaterally seek independent statehood from the United Nations in September.

Analysts believe while the EU may play a role in the Middle east, it is the US who can bring about an agreement between the Palestinians and the Israelis.

Despite international efforts to tacke the current problem, analysts say that the gap between the Israelis and the Palestinians remains wide. Meanwhile pressure is mounting on the Palestinian Authority to drop its plans for September and resume talks with Israel without the latter's commitment to a settlement halt and with no clear reference to two core issues Jerusalem/Al-Quds and the Palestinian refugees.
