Russia Proposes Anti-Drug Info Sharing

In a meeting with Iran's Interior Minister Mostafa Mohammad-Najjar in Tehran on Thursday, Ivanov said Tehran and Moscow can play an effective role in reducing the production of narcotics in Afghanistan and the rest of the Middle East.

“Iran has performed well in its campaign against drug trafficking which is quite noteworthy,” the Russian official added.

Ivanov said that Iran's improved regulations on combating drug trafficking enable the country to play a more effective role in controlling drug trafficking.

Mohammad-Najjar, for his part, welcomed Ivanov's proposal and said Iran expects Moscow to share information with Tehran that will lead to identifying drug laboratories near the Pakistani border.

He noted that Iran could also cooperate with Russia on information sharing about Afghanistan's western provinces bordering Iran.

The war on drugs originating from Afghanistan has claimed the lives of nearly 3,700 Iranian police officers over the past 30 years.

Iran has spent more than USD 700 millions to seal the borders and prevent the transit of narcotics destined for European, Arab and Central Asian countries.
