MP: OIC Not Effective in MENA Revolts

Since January, two revolutions have led to the downfall of despotic rulers in Tunisia and Egypt. Popular uprisings have also hit Libya, Yemen, Bahrain, and other Arab countries.

“The Organization of the Islamic Conference failed to play a proper role in the course of the recent developments” in the Arab world, member of the National Security and Foreign Policy Commission of the Iranian Parliament (Majlis) Seyyed Hossein Naqavi Hosseini said on Saturday.

Hinting at the location of the Islamic international body in the Saudi city of Jeddah, Hosseini said, “Basically, the location of a national and regional organization affects its function, and as the United Nations is influenced by its host country, the US, the OIC may be under the influence of the Saudis.”

The OIC was established in 1969, after the burning of al-Aqsa mosque by Israel, in order to provide a collective voice for the Islamic world and safeguard the interests of Muslims.
