Iran MPs Revoke Salehi Impeachment

On Tuesday, 33 Iranian legislators invoked a parliamentary procedure to force Salehi to defend himself at the Parliament (Majlis) over his decision to pick Mohammad Sharif Malekzadeh as his deputy.

“With regard to the impeachment letter, the impeachment of the foreign minister is revoked,” said Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani on Wednesday.

The lawmakers announced that following consultations, they came to a decision about the cancellation of the motion.

The impeachment process against Salehi comes as the Iranian Intelligence Ministry on Monday opposed the appointment of Malekzadeh as the country's new deputy foreign minister.

Salehi's pick sparked controversy and drew criticism from senior Iranian officials, calling on the foreign minister to immediately dismiss him.

On Tuesday, Malekzadeh submitted his resignation to Salehi in an apparent attempt to avert the impeachment draft.

However, Larijani made it clear later on the same day that the impeachment effort would go forward as planned unless legislators themselves move to withdraw their impeachment motion.

Under the Iranian Constitution, members of the Iranian Parliament can impeach an individual minister in instances they deem necessary. An impeachment motion can be submitted if it bears the signatures of at least 10 lawmakers.
