Larijani Slams Extension of Foreign Presence in Iraq

Larijani made the remarks in Tehran late on Tuesday during a meeting with Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari, who has come to Tehran to participate in a conference on counter-terrorism, which is scheduled to be held in the Iranian capital from June 25 to 26.

Efforts should be made to thwart the plan meant to extend the presence of occupation forces in Iraq because that would overshadow the achievements made by the people in this country, including their struggle for independence, national sovereignty, and democracy, Larijani opined.

He went on to say that the Islamic Republic of Iran has always thrown its weight behind efforts intended to make Iraq progress and resolve problems faced by this country in various spheres.

Iran wants Iraq to emerge as a powerful, democratic, and independent state, Larijani added.

He also said that officials of the two countries should step up their efforts to implement the agreements signed between the two countries.

Larijani then spoke about the pro-democracy uprisings playing out in the region and said, “The position that the Iraqi government recently adopted toward regional developments has elevated the status and role of this country on the regional stage.”

Zebari thanked Iran for providing assistance to the Iraqi nation and government, saying Baghdad sees no obstacle in the way of enhancement of ties with Tehran.

He also announced that important agreements will be signed between the two countries in the near future and predicted that it will help improve bilateral relations.

In addition, Zebari said, “The Iraqi government and the country’s security forces are competent enough to resolve security issues.”

Zebari also held separate talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi and the secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Saeed Jalili on Tuesday and Wednesday respectively.
