Iran Urges Change in UN Structure

“Iran mainly expects the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to act in accordance with the UN Charter, carry out reforms in the structure of the UN and the Security Council and promote global disarmament,” IRNA quoted Khazaei as saying on Tuesday.

“The UN secretary general must prevent certain powers from taking advantage of regional and international issues,” he added.

The top Iranian official also called on the UN chief to remove the existing shortcomings during his second five-term tenure.

Khazaei's remarks came after the 192-member UN General Assembly on Tuesday unanimously adopted a resolution to give the 67-year-old Ban a second term as the UN Secretary General.

Earlier this month, the former South Korean foreign minister announced that he wanted a second term. He faced no opposition as all regional groups at the UN endorsed him.
