Tehran, Ashgabat Urge Enhanced Ties

Referring to the construction of joint railway among Iran, Turkmenistan and Kyrgyzstan, Ahmadinejad said “this project should become operational as soon as possible and serve the welfare of the two nations and the regional nations.”

He made the remarks in a phone conversation with Turkmenistan's President Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov on Wednesday.

The initial agreement on the construction of the railway was signed between presidents of Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan in the city of Turkmenbashi in April 2007 and Iran joined the deal in September 2007.

The 1,000-kilometer railroad will shorten more than 600 kilometers of route for transporting goods from the Central Asia to the Persian Gulf, and will become one of the important international transportation links between China and Europe.

“Cooperation between the two countries is developing on the right track,” Ahmadinejad said, adding that all capacities should be used to strengthen friendly ties.

Gurbanguly for his part praised Iran as a credible partner and friend for his country and said, “Turkmenistan considers cooperation with Iran an honor, and the relations of the two countries are expanding based on the interests of the two nations and mutual trust.”
