US Sanctions Punish Iranian Civilians

“Despite the deceptive and hostile claims by the US that the sanctions solely target firms, legal entities and individuals associated with Iran's peaceful nuclear program …, there is no doubt that the aim of these hostile actions are to pressure the entire Iranian nation,” Iran's UN envoy Mohammad Khazaei said in a letter to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Saturday.

Khazaei said the US-engineered sanctions are a violation of international law as they target the civilian population of a country that is a legitimate member of the UN.

He said the sanctions imposed on Iran's national commercial airliner Iran Air was an example of how the US is directly targeting Iranian civilian and non-military entities.

Under the pretext of nuclear non-proliferation, Washington imposed a new round of sanctions on Iran, prohibiting US entities from any transactions with Tidewater Middle East Company, which operates seven port facilities in Iran, and Iran Air, which serves 35 international and 25 domestic destinations with a fleet of about 40 aircraft, alleging that the two major components of the Iranian transport infrastructure are being used to help the country develop nuclear weapons.

Iran, a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency, says its nuclear program is purely civilian and directed at the peaceful application of the technology.
