Hamid Sajjadi was the previous nominee for the post but failed to win parliamentary approval last week.

An Iranian lawmaker has called on President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to name the country's Sports and Youth minister by the end of next week.

“The president only has the conventional time period to name a minister… and it is expected that it will be done by next week,” ISNA quoted member of the Majlis Presiding Board Mohammad Dehqan as saying on Thursday.

Last month, Ahmadinejad introduced Hamid Sajjadi to Parliament as the candidate to head the newly-established Ministry of Sports and Youth.

Sajjadi, however, failed to gain the parliament's vote of confidence to become the country's first Sports and Youth minister.

Earlier in January, the Iranian Parliament voted for the establishment of the new government ministry called the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

According to the ratified proposal, the new ministry was to be formed by merging Iran's National Youth Organization and the Physical Education Organization.

The Ahmadinejad administration criticized the legislation in the past, arguing that it imposes further financial costs and responsibilities on the government.
