Iran's Speaker Talks up Relations with Azerbaijan

"First of all, I should say that Azerbaijan is a neighboring, Muslim and brotherly country to us. Iran and Azerbaijan share historical ties, based on deep roots," Ali Larijani said in an interview with Azerbaijani news agency Trend.

"From this point of view, the links between the two countries in various fields are at a high level. Fortunately, diplomatic negotiations have been conducted in recent years against a background of political, economic, cultural and social ties between the two countries and relations are continuing to develop," Larijani said.

Several new agreements are expected to be signed on areas "of concern to the Azerbaijani side" during Larijani’s visit.

Commenting on local conflicts, Iran's speaker said Tehran had repeatedly stated that regional conflicts should be resolved through negotiations within the region without the participation of major powers. He criticized directly the mediators on the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict over Karabakh, the OSCE Minsk Group, which is chaired by the USA, France and Russia.

"Experience shows that when big countries interfere with the solution of regional conflicts, this conflict is delayed. They pursue their own goals in this regard. The OSCE Minsk Group has conducted talks on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict for many years. What results have been achieved? How do they react to this problem? From this perspective, we reasonably believe that negotiations to resolve such conflicts can be effectively carried out within the region because the countries in the region can better understand each other. I think that the principle of territorial integrity must certainly be taken into account and discussions should be conducted within the region," Larijani said.

Asked about the mediation role of Iran and Turkey in resolving regional conflicts, the Speaker said: "We have close and lengthy exchanges of views on many developments in the region. The leader of the Islamic Revolution, Imam Khomeini, said that Muslim countries should always be friendly and united. The strategy of the Islamic Republic of Iran is based on this. If Muslim countries unite, assessing the existing capacity, they can prevent interference in the affairs of countries in the region by those who want to create problems there. We can point to the cooperation between Iran, Azerbaijan and Turkey as exemplary cooperation in the region. All three countries communicate with each other and cooperate in many spheres."
