MENA Uprisings Rooted in Qur'an: Senior Cleric

In a message on the occasion on the 28th International Holy Qur'an Competition in the Iranian capital, Tehran, Ayatollah Hossein Nouri Hamedani referred to the developments in countries such as Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, Yemen, Jordan and Bahrain, and said, this great wave of awakening is a fruit of Iran's glorious Islamic Revolution which, in turn, is rooted in the Holy Qur'an, IRNA reported Thursday.

He further said that the wave of uprisings and revolutions in the Arab world is aimed at countering the domination of arrogant powers and their puppet regimes, who have for centuries kept Muslim nations away from the path of the Holy Qur'an through cultural, military, political and economic invasions.

Ayatollah Hamedani further called for solidarity among all Muslims and called on Muslim nations to unite under the banner of Islam and the Holy Qur'an.

Tunisia saw the overthrow of Zine El Abidine Ben Ali in a popular revolution in January, which was soon followed by a revolution which toppled Hosni Mubarak in Egypt in February.

Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Libya, Saudi Arabia and Yemen have since been the scene of protests against their totalitarian rulers, who have resorted to brutal crackdown on demonstrations to silence their critics.

Bahrain and Yemen, however, have experienced the deadliest clashes, while in Bahrain the military intervention of Saudi-led forces from neighboring Arab states has further fueled the crisis in the Persian Gulf kingdom.
