Iran Raps UK Crackdown on Public Strikes

Iran's Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast in a Sunday statement criticized the behavior of the British police towards protesters.

“The UK government's crackdown on peaceful popular protests …is another indication of [London's] opposition to the legitimate rights of the people in expressing their opinions and staging gatherings.”

He also called on British authorities to free all protesters rounded up during Thursday's protest walk-outs, and to avoid violence against peaceful demonstrations.

At least 30 people were arrested in London on Thursday as thousands of public employees -- including teachers, lecturers, court staff, passport officers and other civil servants -- staged what they said was the biggest walkout in a generation.

The strikes are the first major uprising over the Conservative-led government's ambitious plans to slash USD 128 billion in spending over the next four years.

Under the pension reform plan, British public-sector workers will have to work longer and contribute more, and generally for smaller pensions.

Britain's teachers unions and largest civil service union in the country, Public and Commercial Services, took part in Thursday's strike and warned that this is the beginning of a larger wave of industrial action if the pension dispute is not resolved.
