Thai Army Accepts Opposition's Victory

Thailand's outgoing defense minister and former Army Chief Prawit Wongsuwan said the military would not try to block Yingluck Shinawatra from forming a government, Reuters reported.

"I can assure that the military has no desire to stray out of its assigned roles," Wongsuwan said.

“The army accepts the election results, and I can say clearly that we have never entertained any idea of doing anything that will damage the country," he added.

Yingluck managed to win 264 seats in the 500-seat parliament to become Thailand's first female prime minister.

She announced that she would form a five-party coalition led by her Pheu Thai Party that would control about 60 percent of the parliament.

Former Premier Thaksin Shinawatra, who lives in exile, has said that he does not plan to return to his homeland, but thanked the nation for voicing concerns about their country.

Following Yingluck's victory, the outgoing Premier Abhisit Vejjajiva conceded defeat and claimed responsibility for the defeat. He also resigned from the Democrat Party's leadership.

The Pheu Thai Party is the third incarnation of a Thai political party originally founded by Shinawatra.
