Scores of people rallied in front of the German Parliament to express outrage over the reported sale of 200 Leopard 2 combat tanks for the dictatorial regime in Saudi Arabia.
They voiced fear that the tanks might be deployed by the Saudi government against its own people or against the Bahrainis who have already fell victim to the Saudi invasion in mid-March.
An organizer of the protests, Christoph Bautz slammed the 'cynical' policies of the German government welcoming the Arab revolutions in Egypt and Tunisia while arming the despotic regime in Riyadh with German state-of-the-art weapons.
Bautz urged Berlin to refrain from sending arms to crisis-hit regions, including the volatile Persian Gulf region.
Meanwhile, Bautz reported that within 24 hours more than 40,000 people have signed an online petition urging Chancellor Angela Merkel to stop the deliver Leopard 2 tanks to Saudi Arabia.
The Merkel Government has been under fire by all major parties, churches and peace as well as human rights organizations over the highly questionable sale.
Berlin has been tight-lipped on the deal, neither confirming nor denying the sale, citing the need to safeguard national security interests.
