Speaker: Iran, Turkey Are Major Regional Players

In a meeting with Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu in Tehran on Monday, Larijani said Tehran and Ankara can play influential and significant roles in the resolution of conflicts in the Middle East.

He added that the recent popular uprisings in Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, and Bahrain are the feedback of the demand for democracy and are the result of national humiliations suffered under dictatorial puppet regimes.

But the United States and other Western countries are pursuing their own objectives in the region and are attempting to take control of the pro-democracy movements in the Middle East and North Africa, Larijani stated.

Davutoglu said Turkey believes most of the problems of the region can be resolved through cooperation between Ankara and Tehran.

He went on to say that Turkey is opposed to foreign interference in North Africa, adding that the Turkish government believes that internal disputes must be resolved through peaceful means and in a way that responds to the people's demands.

The Turkish foreign minister also noted that a strong and stable Syria is important for both Turkey and the Islamic Republic of Iran.
