More Job Losses Expected in UK Public Sector

But the number of people claiming jobseekers allowance has risen during the same period, which analysts have said is due to a change in the benefits system.

On the streets of London there are mixed feelings over the jobs market and the economy.

More job losses are expected in the public sector as the government pushes ahead with its spending cuts. And areas such as the police and health service are not exempt.

“The Police federation is warning that plans to cut thousands of jobs in the police force could have serious consequences for the UK. The government has planned a 20 percent reduction in funding for the police across England and Wales, at a time when officers say they're needed more than ever.”

More than two thousand off-duty police officers held a meeting close to parliament to send a message to the government that crime would rise further if their budget was slashed.

Trade unions and students have been holding major days of protest in London since the cuts and rises in university fees were announced last year. But so far the government has stayed the course on its austerity measures, which it says are necessary to reduce the UK's massive budget deficit.
