Iran Urges D8 to Step up Global Role

“The Islamic Republic strongly believes that the significance of the group is not only in strengthening intra-group relations among the member states, but also in … spreading the principle of dialogue and cooperation, exercising justice, and establishing regional and global peace and tranquility,” Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi told the D8 summit on Thursday in the Nigerian capital, Abuja, IRNA reported.

Salehi highlighted the losses the world countries have suffered as a result of the global economic recession in the past three years, and called for a close study of the crisis and its impact on the D8 economies.

“Undoubtedly the cooperative and coordinated movement of the D8 member states, as a major and fundamental solution, will not only have the potential and capability to tackle the harmful impacts of global crises, but can contribute to the formation and establishment of regional and global peace and stability,” he said.

Salehi lauded the growing cooperation within the D8 since the establishment of the group in Turkey in 1997, and called for a faster implementation of the group's earlier agreements.

The Iranian minister urged an expansion of cooperation among the D8 member states to various areas, including agriculture, energy, food security, industry and transportation.

“In the Islamic Republic's view, trade among member states and joint investments is one of the major ways for the achievement of D8 and its founders' high goals,” he said.

Iran, Turkey, Malaysia, Pakistan, Nigeria, Egypt, Bangladesh and Indonesia are members of D8.

Salehi, whose country is set to take the rotating presidency of the D8 starting from 2013, said Tehran has proposed to host an expert meeting on the establishment of a joint investment fund for the group later in the month.
