Iraqi Politicians Reject US Forces Presence Extension

The Iraqi National coalition which has the majority in the parliament, has urged the US to withdraw its forces by the end of this year.

The announcement came as a response to a question by the US Defense Secretary, Leon Panetta during his last visit to Iraq. He called on the Iraqi politicians to take an immediate decision about this issue.

Leon Panetta made his first visit to Iraq as US Defense Secretary to address several issues including the recent rash of attacks on U.S. troops and the presence of them in Iraq.

Some observers saw Panetta's visit as an opportunity put pressure on the Iraq's political leaders to extend the US forces presence in the country.

On the other hand, they say that any decision in this regard should be taken not by political blocks but people.

With the date of the US forces withdrawal from Iraq approaching, the Iraqi government is coming under pressure by the US to extend the presence of the occupation forces.
