MP: Terrorist Bombings in Karbala Aim to Stir Sectarian Feud in Iraq

"The Islamic Republic of Iran takes occupiers of Iraq accountable for the terrorist moves in the Shiite and Sunni regions and urges all Iraqi Muslims to preserve unity and dash Americans' hope," member of the parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Hossein Ebrahimi told FNA on Saturday.

He pointed to the recent terrorist bombings in the holy city of Karbala, and stated, "Americans intend to accuse Sunni brothers of action against Shiites through bombings in Karbala and other terrorist moves in Shiite regions."

The legislator added that the US is desperately seeking to sow discord among Muslims in the region, specially after the recent revolutions and popular uprisings in the regional Arab states.

"But unity among Muslims will result in the US pullout from the region," the Iranian lawmaker underscored.

The remarks by the Iranian lawmaker came after at least 18 people were killed and 83 others were wounded in several car bomb blasts in Iraq's Western province of Karbala Saturday.

Speaking to FNA in the holy city of Karbala, General Othman al-Ghanimi, the official in charge of security in the region, said, "Thus far, a number of 18 people have been killed and 83 others have been wounded in the terrorist attacks in the province."

He added that the first attack took place against Shiite pilgrims in the Northern parts of the province, killing 8 people and injuring 33 others.

Also FNA dispatches reported that three other car bombs went off simultaneously in the town of Hindiya Saturday morning and killed 10 people and wounded 50 other people.

On Friday, two car bombs were blown off in the town of Toiridge, 25km East of the holy city of Karbala killing 5 persons, and wounding 23 others.
