Larijani: Israel Afraid of Its Own Shadow

Speaking at a parliamentary session on Wednesday, Larijani said Israel has once again stopped a ship carrying aid and international activists to the blockaded Gaza Strip. He added that Israel's seizure of ships in the planned humanitarian flotilla to Gaza is piracy, and marks another political disgrace in the history of Israel.

Israeli commandoes boarded and took over the Dignite/Al Karama ship on Tuesday as it approached the Gaza Strip to break Israel's blockade of the Palestinian coastal sliver.

Larijani also criticized the United States and the West for full support they threw behind the move. He said such behavior has further demonstrated their deep concern over the Middle East developments than to be a show of their might.

The senior Iranian official noted that the takeover of Gaza-bound Dignite/Al Karama ship by Israeli naval commandoes must be assessed within a wider scope, and that is the ongoing Islamic Awakening movement in the Middle East and North Africa.

Over the past few months, US and Western officials have been witness to the downfall of despotic rulers whom they backed for years. Yemeni, Libyan and Bahraini nations are determined to have their demands met in the face of Western attempts to put down their popular uprisings, Larijani pointed out.

The top Iranian official also called on Washington and Tel Aviv to have a broad understating of Palestinian issues and refrain from measures to stop the formation of an independent Palestinian state.
