Iranian FM Meets Turkmen President in Ashgabat

During the meeting on Thursday, Salehi highlighted the importance of improving trade and economic relations with Turkmenistan.

Tehran and Ashgabat have always had amicable relations. The two sides held a session of joint economic commission and discussed ways to promote economic relations, said Salehi.

The Turkmen chief executive lauded friendly ties with the Islamic Republic and said cultural bonds between the two countries helped Tehran and Ashgabat to expand relations.

Berdymukhammedov added that Turkmenistan will make efforts to bolster bilateral cooperation.

During Salehi's trip to Ashgabat, the Iranian and Turkmen sides are due to sign a memorandum of understanding on mutual cooperation at the end of the meeting.

Earlier this week, Iranian Ambassador to Ashgabat Seyed Moussa Hashemi Golpayegani told FNA that during the trip, Salehi is scheduled to hold meetings with a number of senior Turkmen officials, including President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and Foreign Minister Rashid Meredev.

Golpayegani expressed the hope that the visit would further promote expansion of bilateral ties between the two countries, and said, "We are happy that we are not faced with any problem in developing relations with Turkmenistan."

Iran has in recent years enhanced efforts to boost political, economic and cultural ties and cooperation with the regional and neighboring countries, specially those in the Central Asia.
