Russia, Libya 'Discussed' Gaddafi's Exit

The Russian foreign ministry sources say the two sides discussed Gaddafi's exit as a way to facilitate a peaceful settlement of the country's crisis.

"The topic of Muammar Gaddafi's departure from power was discussed at this meeting and discussed in fairly concrete terms, including in the light of contacts that took place between Tripoli's representatives and Americans and the French," the Interfax news agency quoted an unnamed source as saying on Friday.

The remarks came after Libyan Foreign Minister Abdelati al-Obeidi held talks with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov in Moscow on Wednesday.

Meanehile, al-Obeidi has rejected such reports as untrue, saying the issue of Gaddafi's exit was not on the agenda.

Some media reports also say the US has agreed to provide Gaddafi with a safe haven if he agrees to step down.

A US delegation meeting with Libyan officials is said to have offered Gaddafi with guarantees that he will not be tracked down for prosecution.

France too, has said Gaddafi can stay in Libya if he quits politics. France's foreign minister says a cease-fire deal can only come about if the Libyan ruler makes a formal commitment to give up his civil and military responsibilities.

The African nation has been the scene of intense fighting between regime troops and revolutionary forces since mid-February.

The bloody conflict has left thousands dead and wounded.

NATO has also recently intensified its attacks on Libya in an alleged attempt to increase pressure on Gaddafi.
