"The independent countries of the world should strongly continue the path of cooperation, unity and resistance against imperialism's opposition to the consolidation and strengthening of relations among free states and nations," Ahmadinejad said in a meeting with Ecuadorian Ambassador to Iran Bicente Blis on Saturday.

"The independent governments and nations should use all their capacities and expand their cooperation in a maximized and all-out form and free from the dominance of imperialism."

As regards the bilateral ties between Iran and Ecuador, Ahmadinejad said, "Development of Iran-Ecuador relations serves the interests of the two nations and other independent states."

Also during the meeting, Blis submitted a copy of his credentials to President Ahmadinejad, and stressed Quito's strong opposition to the measures taken by the US and its allies to use international bodies as a leverage against the independent countries.

In April, Ecuador's National Assembly Speaker Fernando Cordero Cueva underlined his country's resolve to boost ties with Iran.

Those who oppose close ties between Iran and Ecuador have launched a propaganda campaign aimed at marring the positive relations between the two states, Cueva stated in a meeting with Iran's Energy Minister Majid Namjou in the Ecuadorian capital city of Quito.

Iran has in recent years expanded friendly relations with Latin America, specially in economic, trade and industrial fields.

Since taking office in 2005, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has expanded Iran's cooperation with many Latin American states, including Venezuela, Bolivia, Cuba, Brazil and Ecuador.
