Egypt Coalition Threatens to Boycott Parliamentary Elections

TEHRAN, July 25 (ICANA) – Egypt's Democratic Coalition held a meeting Saturday. They said they will give Egypt's ruling military council one more chance to rectify its position toward elections for the People s Assembly and the Shura Council, the lower and upper houses of parliament.

According to news reports, potential presidential candidate Amr Moussa attended the meeting. He and other political figures signed the coalition s statement. The statement said the coalition's members reject the proposed election law and the proportional list system, because it will give an advantage to member of the ousted former regime.

Al-Sayyed al-Badawi, head of the liberal al-Wafd Party, said the coalition has not decided to boycott the elections but will consider doing so in its next meeting.

Al-Bawadi also said the coalition rejects international election monitoring but does not mind monitoring by internal civil society organizations.
