Obstruction Made to Cancel Iftar Ceremony at Danish Parliament

According to the AFP, the hype on holding fast breaking ceremony at the Danish parliament started when one of the Social Democratic MPs of Denmark decided to throw an iftar party in cooperation with a Scandinavian newspaper on August 22 to mark the end of the fasting month of Ramadhan.

However, after an MP from the People’s Party of Denmark lodged a complaint against this decision, parliament officials had the ceremony cancelled announcing that it ran contrary to the laws prevailing over the country.

The speaker of the Danish parliament said the invitation letters were sent to those attending the ceremony by the Zaman newspaper of Scandinavia which is a private newspaper.

A lawmaker supporting the ceremony said the fast breaking ceremony will not be held due to political reasons. "There is nothing in the law that prevents us from holding this ceremony. I will be happy to be host to such a ceremony next year." He stressed that hosting a fast breaking ceremony in Ramadhan does not need permission.

The issue is to be raised by Danish politicians at the weekend.
