Iranian Parliament to Mull Prosecution of American Cultural Officials

Speaking to ICANA on Sunday, MP Sattar Hedayat-Khah said the single-urgent motion will be taken up at the National Security and Foreign Policy Commission as the main commission and at the Cultural Commission as a secondary commission.

He added that the Majlis Cultural Commission will review part of the motion dealing with the names of certain cultural figures of the US.

Members of the Cultural Commission will discuss the single urgency of the motion on sanctioning and prosecuting certain American officials in its Tuesday session. The motion will also be discussed at the Judicial and Legal Commission of the Parliament this week.

The Iranian parliament announced last month that they will try 26 US officials in absentia and file lawsuits against them in the world court. The list of officials includes General David Petraeus, Donald Rumsfeld, General Stanley McCrystal and Paul Bremmer.

Iran has lamented that while the 26 American officials have played direct roles in US criminal acts in Iraq, Afghanistan and other countries, they still continue to serve in different posts in the US today.

The Iranian parliament had earlier announced plans to annul the country’s agreements with all the state and private firms and companies which are affiliated or somehow related to the 26 US officials sanctioned by Iran.

The United States and its Western allies have already slapped sanctions on a number of Iranian officials over their involvement in the country's controversial nuclear program and alleged violations of human rights.
