NAM States Can Help Discredit Anti-Iran Sanctions

Speaking to ICANA on Sunday, Mohsen Kouhkan Rizi, a member of the Presiding Board of the Majlis (Iranian parliament) said: "France, US, UK, Germany and Canada adopted a politically motivated position against Iran's nuclear program. These countries joined by the Zionist regime have always tried to build up a global consensus against IRI by launching smear propaganda against Tehran. But the support voiced by the Non-Aligned states for Iran's logical and legal approach is a rejection of these schemes."

The NAM member states have once again issued a statement in support of the Islamic Republic of Iran's peaceful nuclear program. The statement will be read in the next meeting of the Board of Governors by Egypt's envoy to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Ihab Fawzi.

In its statement, the NAM has hailed Iran's invitation of Deputy Head of the IAEA's Safeguards Department Herman Nackaerts to visit the country's nuclear facilities as a confidence-building measure.

Nackaerts visited Iran's Bushehr nuclear power plant, the enrichment facilities in Natanz and Fordo, the nuclear fuel rods production factory in Isfahan, as well as the heavy water research reactor in Arak and the city's heavy water production plant.

The next meeting of the Board of Governors will be held on September 12 in the IAEA headquarter in Vienna.

Terming the NAM statement in support of Iran important, Kouhkan said membership of 118 countries in the movement shows that the arrogant powers do not have the support of the majority in its anti-Iran sanctions.

He urged the IRI Foreign Ministry to take the most advantage of the NAM card in developing its foreign relations and bypassing the international sanctions. "When the NA Movement terms Iran's nuclear program peaceful so transparently and so explicitly this means that they would not attach much value to any unfair Security Council resolution."

The lawmaker said the Western media in compliance with the goals of the arrogant powers may try to downplay the NAM statement or simply overlook it. But, he said, the IRI diplomatic machine should make an arrangement to highlight the various aspects of the issue in global debates and position takings.

In June 2010, the UN Security Council imposed a fourth round of sanctions on Iran under intense pressure from the United States and its allies who claim Tehran's nuclear program may have potential military aspects.

This is while in its numerous inspections of Iran's nuclear sites, the IAEA has never found any evidence that the country has deviated from its peaceful nuclear program.

On September 5, Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran Fereydoun Abbasi said Tehran has offered to give the IAEA full supervision for five years if sanctions imposed against the Islamic Republic are lifted.

Iran says that as a member of the IAEA and a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, it has every right to the peaceful applications of nuclear energy for electricity generation and medical research.
