TEHRAN, Sept 14 (ICANA) – Iran's Parliament (Majils) Speaker Ali Larijani has termed the current developments in the region as "a great and profound event" and a "historic opportunity" for the Muslim nations.

Speaking in a meeting here in Tehran with member of the Iraqi Supreme Council Adel Abdel Mahdi on Wednesday, Larijani noted: "The present scene is the scene of a crucial confrontation between the wish of the Muslim nations for freedom and progress and attempts by the international powers and their dictator allies."

Underlining the strong resolve of Iranian and Iraqi leaders to develop mutual brotherly relations in all areas as well as deep bonds of friendship between the two nations, Larijani stated: "The prospect of fraternal cooperation between the two sides is very bright and serves the interests of both nations and of the Muslim Ummah."

The Majlis speaker also said Iran-Iraq cooperation can leave great impacts on the regional trends and developments and serve Muslim nations.

"The people and leaders of the Islamic Republic of Iran have always been beside the Iraqi nation at the most difficult times and will continue to do so. We will also spare no assistance for development and progress of Iraq and solving its problems," the top Iranian lawmaker said.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Larijani called for vigilance and solidarity of the Islamic forces in the region against the intrigues of the global powers.

Speaking in the same meeting, the Iraqi leader thanked the IRI for its support for and cooperation with Iraqi nation and leaders at times of hardship. He added that development of brotherly ties with IRI in all areas is the wish of all the political forces and people of Iraq.

He also thanked the Islamic Consultative Assembly (Majlis) for its supports for consolidation of relations between the two neighboring nations.

Referring to the current developments in the Middle East and North Africa, Abdel Mahdi said the trend of these events will certainly serve the interests of the Muslim nations.

He also termed the revolutions in Egypt, Tunisia and Yemen a "huge political earthquake" in the region.
