'Powers seek to curb Islamic Awakening'

“The efforts made so far by the hegemonic powers and global arrogance to quell the regional popular movement have been aimed at curbing the Islamic Awakening in the region,” said Hossein Sobhani-Nia, a member of Iran's Majlis (parliament) Committee on National Security and Foreign Policy, on Saturday.

He argued that the hegemonic powers use every opportunity to gain access to the sources of raw material across the globe, and spare no effort in violating the rights of the people.

A wave of revolutions and anti-government uprisings has recently swept the Arab world.

So far, revolutions have occurred in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya; and other anti-government upheavals have erupted in Yemen and Bahrain. Meanwhile, more Arab countries are expected to witness similar revolts.

Sobhani-Nia pointed to Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's speech at the UN General Assembly's 66th session, and described it as the Islamic Republic's firm position.

At his UN speech, Ahmadinejad said nations have started to awaken across the Muslim world, Asia, Europe, and the United States “now more than any other time.”

He said justice- and freedom-seeking developments were expanding in scope day by day, calling this a herald of “a brighter future.”

Ahmadinejad criticized the world's bullying powers for finding their progress and affluence in the destruction, poverty and humiliation of other nations.
