MP slams president for hinting US ties

“Unfortunately, this argument by the president is against the principles of the [Islamic] Revolution and the viewpoints of [the country's] decision-making authorities, because the Iranian nation has never suffered any loss from having no ties with the US,” said Javad Jahangir-Zadeh, a member of the Majlis Committee on National Security and Foreign Policy, quoted on Saturday in a Fars news agency report.

During President Ahmadinejad's visit to New York to attend the 66th annual session of the United Nations General Assembly, he mentioned in a Thursday address to Iranian nationals residing in the US that Washington must respect the rights of the Iranian nation since it will prepare the ground for bilateral cooperation that will serve to benefit both sides

Jahangir-Zadeh pointed to the recent uprisings across the Middle East and North Africa, which have turned into anti-US movements, arguing that the US needs relations with Iran in order to survive.

He stressed that in case any ties are to be established with Washington, only Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei will announce the decision.

The Iranian lawmaker made a reference to the move by the representatives from the United States and some of its allies to leave the UN General Assembly's session during Ahmadinejad's Thursday speech, and criticized the Iranian delegation at the UN for not having walked out when US President Barack Obama started his speech.

In his Thursday speech at the UN, Ahmadinejad criticized the world's bullying powers for finding their progress and affluence in the destruction, poverty and humiliation of other nations.

He also said the US government was involved in the 9/11 attacks or allowed them to happen “to reverse the declining American economy” and find an excuse to wage the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.
