TEHRAN, Oct 5 (ICANA) – Senior Iranian lawmaker Jawad Karimi Qodusi calls for better accommodation of Shia pilgrims in the holy city of Mashhad, which, as he estimates in the near future will host near 100 million visitors annually.

Speaking with Qods Weekly, Karimi said; "the holy city of Mashhad is faced with the increasing number of pilgrims which necessitates a quick rise in the accommodation capacities."

Referring to the increase in the Shia population in different parts of the world, he said: "more than 25 million Shia pilgrims from around the world annually visit the city which is home to the holy shrine of Imam Reza (AS)."

He further noted: "The city currently lacks the needed infrastructure for the accommodation of such a huge number of pilgrims and tourists."

"City officials are expected to take necessary measures to increase capacities for the accommodation of pilgrims in the near future."
