Larijani due in Bern for IPU meeting

TEHRAN, Oct 16 (ICANA) – Iran's Majlis (parliament) Speaker Ali Larijani has set off for the Swiss capital of Bern to attend the 125th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).

Larijani, who is heading a political delegation, told reporters ahead of his departure early Sunday that participants in the IPU assembly are scheduled to discuss key regional and international issues, IRNA reported.

The top Iranian parliamentarian will also take part in the IPU General Assembly meeting and deliver a speech at the union's Committee on Peace and International Security on the latest developments in the Middle East and North Africa.

On the sidelines of the meetings, Larijani will hold talks with his counterparts attending the event.

During the four-day event, parliament representatives from more than 120 countries are scheduled to exchange views on a variety of political, economic and social issues.

Parliamentary delegations will also discuss ways to promote and practice good governance as a means of advancing peace and security following the recent events in the Middle East and North Africa. They will also exchange views on the redistribution of power and not just wealth as well as the role of parliaments in addressing key challenges to securing the health of women and children.

The IPU is an international organization established in 1889 with the purpose of promoting democracy and inter-parliamentary dialogue in close contact with the United Nations.
