US obstructing MENA democratization

In a meeting with President of the German Bundestag Norbert Lammert on the sidelines of the 125th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in the Swiss capital of Bern, Ali Larijani said Iran defends democracy-seeking movements in MENA but some countries like the US are against them.

These [Western] countries supported the former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, but changed position when faced with the wave of popular protests,” IRNA quoted him as saying.

Perhaps the Americans pursue short-term interests [by opposing popular protests], but opposing the position of the people will create problems for them in the long run,” he added.

Larijani went on to say that Iran extensively cooperates with the International Atomic Energy Agency on its nuclear case and had even allowed IAEA inspectors to visit its nuclear facilities.

The German official, for his part, said his country had differences with the US on certain foreign policy issues and was planning to reduce military presence in Afghanistan due to these differences.

Lammert said Germany is ready to help MENA revolutionary nations build their future.

He expressed hope that Iran and IAEA would soon reach an agreement on its nuclear issue.
