Parliamentary system could be more efficient

Larijani made the remarks after Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei announced in Kermanshah on October 16 that "under the country's current political system, the president is directly elected by the people, which is a good and effective method. However, if, perhaps in the distant future, it is felt that it would be better if officials of the administrative branch be chosen according to a parliamentary system, there will be no problem if changes are made to the current mechanism."

Larijani stated that changing the country's political system from presidential system to a parliamentary one will help better coordinate the activities of the three branches of the government.

"However, the current system has many advantages, and there is no flaw in it," Larijani told the Mehr News Agency in an exclusive interview.

On the fact that a number of Western media outlets have said that the Leader intends to reduce the power of presidents, Larijani said, "The Leader's proposals are anti-dictatorship. The appointment of president by experts elected by the people would mean that the Majlis will supervise president and ask him for explanations. This would make president more responsible."

"The establishment of a parliamentary system would not mean restricting president's authority, but president could have the authority he has under the presidential system and answer to the people at the same time," he added.
