Guardian Council urges clean campaigns

“Those [candidates] who spend unconventionalsums of money for the election [campaigns] …might have a problem in securing the approval of the Guardian Council,” Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati said during Tehran's Friday Prayer sermon, IRNA reported.

Iran's Guardian Council is tasked with supervising the elections and vetting the candidates.

He added that the council would be closely monitoring the election campaigns all across the country to identify those who spend “unconventional” amounts of money to win.

Ayatollah Jannati pointed to Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei attributing the successes and accomplishments of Iran to “the presence of the people on the scene,” and urged Iranians to participate in the Majlis elections.

The parliamentary elections are scheduled to be held on March 2, 2012. Candidate registration began on December 24 and will continue until the 30th.
