Majlis begins minister's impeachment

Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad arrived at the Majlis session on Tuesday to speak in favor of Hosseini and his performance as an effective cabinet minister.

The president, accompanied by a number of cabinet members, was welcomed by First Vice President Mohammad Reza Rahimi, Vice-President for Parliamentary Affairs Mohammad Reza Mir-Tajeddini and the lawmakers.

At the beginning of the session, the lawmakers will have two hours to express their views in favor of and against Hosseini's impeachment.

Hosseini will then get the opportunity to address the lawmakers in defense of his performance and responding to their criticism and concerns.

The legislators that have signed the motion for the impeachment of the economy minister have said that the move is mainly aimed at assuring the Iranian nation that a firm attitude will be adopted toward the recent 2.6-billion-dollar banking scam in the country.

A member of the Majlis Presiding Board, Omidvar Rezaie, earlier announced that the impeachment comes following Hosseini's failure to apply - or his violation of - the rules related to the economy minister's duties with respect to banks and financial and monetary institutions, appointing unqualified figures to important positions and his failure to supervise the performance of banks.

Under the Iranian Constitution, members of the Iranian Parliament can impeach an individual minister in instances they deem necessary. Impeachment can be submitted if it bears the signatures of at least ten lawmakers.

The cabinet or the minister must be present in Majlis within ten days after the submission of the impeachment in order to respond and seek a vote of confidence.
