Iran, India stress parliamentary ties

During a Thursday meeting with Kumar in Tehran, the Iranian Majlis speaker highlighted the importance of Tehran-New Delhi bilateral ties and pointed out that the current situation in the region necessitates the expansion of economic ties between the two countries, Mehr News Agency reported.

“Establishing peace and security in the region requires the cooperation of regional countries,” he said.

The chief Iranian parliamentarian further pointed to the common outlooks of the two countries on such regional issues as establishing peace and fighting terrorism and counternarcotics.

“The speakers of the two countries' parliaments have similar opinions regarding the recently formed democracies in the region and the Palestine issue. These are great potentials that can be further explored,” Larijani added.

The visiting speaker of India's lower house of parliament, for her part, expressed her country's willingness to expand parliamentary ties with the Islamic Republic.

“Iran has made a considerable contribution to the longevity of the global civilization,” she said.

The two officials had also held a meeting on the sidelines of the 125th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in the Swiss capital of Bern in October.

During the IPU meeting the two sides exchanged views on mutual relations and global issues.
