Majlis adopts bill to downgrade UK ties

During Wednesday's open meeting of the Majlis, the bill was approved with an absolute majority, with 162 votes in favor, 5 against and 6 abstentions.

Before the ratification vote, Alaeddin Boroujerdi, chairman of the Majlis Commission on National Security and Foreign Policy, elaborated on Britain's hostile policies towards Iran.

The senior legislator emphasized that since the aggressive positions of the British government towards Iran are in no way proportional to mutual ties at ambassadorial level, the new Majlis bill thus aims to downgrade the diplomatic ties to the level of charge d'affaires and limit all economic and cultural collaborations to the minimum level.

Earlier on Tuesday, Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani also announced that Tehran would review its relations with those European countries that have unilaterally imposed sanctions on Iran.

Britain and the US have imposed new sanctions on Iran's banking and energy sectors after the UN nuclear agency's recent report on Tehran's nuclear program.
