UK plan to extradite Tajik to US illegal

The extradition of Tajik, after five years of house arrest, to the US over unfounded charges is illegal and illogical, said Deputy Head of Iran's Majlis Committee on National Security and Foreign Policy Esmail Kowsari on Friday.

He also noted that the Iranian Majlis and Foreign Ministry have been working together over the past five years to secure the release of Tajik, Mehr News Agency reported.

Earlier, the British Home Office confirmed plans to hand over Tajik to the US as soon as possible.

The decision came despite the former Iranian envoy saying that he is too ill to travel and that he will face a show trial in the United States.

Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi on July 21 called on the British government to seriously “reconsider” its diplomatic behavior toward the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Salehi said that Britain can take a positive step in reconsidering its diplomatic ties with Iran by lifting the restrictions on Tajik.

Tajik was arrested in November 2006, and is accused of allegedly trying to purchase night-vision goggles for Iran from US mediators.

According to British media reports, undercover FBI agents who were acting as international military equipment dealers offered to sell Tajik the night-vision goggles valued over £50,000 while secretly filming him.

Tajik and his lawyers argue that the US agents planned to incriminate him from the beginning, as they were not following a legitimate lead.
