Majlis passes bill to downgrade UK ties

In an open session of the Majlis on Sunday, the double-urgency bill was approved with an absolute majority, with 179 votes in favor, 4 against and 11 abstentions, IRNA reported.

The new bill is meant to downgrade the diplomatic ties between Tehran and London to the level of charge d'affaires, and limit all economic and cultural collaborations to the minimum level.

The Iranian lawmakers offered the bill in response to the UK's recent decision to impose sanctions against the Central Bank of the Islamic Republic of Iran, over the allegation that Tehran's nuclear program may consist of a covert military agenda.

It gives the Iranian Foreign Ministry two weeks to downgrade political ties with the UK to the level of charge d’affaires.

The bill requires that the level of economic and trade ties with Britain be dropped to minimum.

The bill also wants the Foreign Ministry to adopt similar positions against any other countries which might follow the same policies as the UK adopted towards Iran.

It also noted that Iran regarded the UK as a major element behind anti-Iran human rights resolutions, barring Iran from gaining access to its inalienable peaceful nuclear rights, excluding the terrorist Mojahedeen-e Khalq Organization (MKO) from the list of terrorist groups and assisting Saddam Hussein during the imposed war against Iran.
