Afghan parliament approves appointment of new central bank governor

With a vote of 173 in favor, the 249-member body voted Saturday to approve Noorullah Delawari’s nomination. The body has also approved the appointment of the head of the country’s national intelligence service.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai nominated Delawari to the post on Thursday. Delawari is a former central bank governor who now sits on the institution’s governing board.

His first priority will be to deal with the aftermath of a mismanagement scandal at Kabul Bank, once Afghanistan’s largest private financial institution.
