Tehran, Dec 25 (ICANA) – Candidates began registering on Saturday for the parliamentary elections, which will be held on March 2, 2012.

The Iranian Interior Ministry election headquarters has announced that the registration will last one week after which the Guardian Council will start vetting the candidates. The candidates, who gain the approval of the Guardian Council, will run for parliament’s 290 seats.

Meanwhile, Head of Parliamentary Elections Headquarter said that 254 candidates have registered in the first day of registration for the 9th parliamentary elections.

Seyed Solat Mortazavi, in a TV interview on Saturday evening, said that 245 men and 9 women registered in the first day.

He added that registration continues until Friday December 30, 2011 and its time will not be extended.

According to the law, the candidates should adhere to the Constitution, the principles of the Islamic system and velayat-e faqih (rule of the supreme jurisprudent), and should have a master’s degree or a qualification which is equivalent to a master’s degree.

Majlis (Parliament) elections will be held on March 2, 2012.
