Hormuz Strait vital to world economy

Iran's massive Velayat-90 naval exercises, currently underway in an area stretching from the east of the Strait of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Aden, convey the message of “peace” and “security”, and pose no threat to the regional states, the senior Iranian lawmaker pointed out.

He added that the war games, which began on December 24, actually demonstrate the power and capability of Iran's Navy in the establishment of peace in the Middle East.

Boroujerdi stressed that the Strait of Hormuz has great strategic significance. Nevertheless, it is not Iran's intention to close the narrow passage.

Iran has warned that it can respond to proposed Western oil sanctions and threats against the Islamic Republic by choking the oil flow through the Strait of Hormuz.
