Tehran, Jan 23, (ICANA) – Member of Iran's Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee Hossein Naghavi Hosseini has described the recent decision by the state-controlled British Office of Communications (Ofcom) to ban the alternative English-language television network, Press TV, in the UK as a crackdown on freedom of expression.

UK ban on Press TV chokes free speech

Naghavi Hosseini said on Monday that revoking Press TV's broadcasting license in the UK runs counter to Britain's claims about advocating democracy and free speech.

The British government silences an alternative voice in the United Kingdom while it condemns other countries for failing to uphold the right to freedom of expression and to create a “multi-voice” political atmosphere, Naghavi Hosseini pointed out.

Ofcom, the communications regulator in the United Kingdom, revoked Press TV's broadcasting license and finally removed the channel from the Sky platform on January 20 for what it called the breaching of Ofcom's broadcasting code.
