Guardian Council okays 55% of parliament hopefuls

Tehran, Jan 28, (ICANA) – The Guardian Council has approved the qualifications of 55 percent of the candidates who had registered to run for the next parliamentary election, the council’s spokesman Abbas Ali Kadkhodaii announced on Saturday.

The election is scheduled to be held on March 2. MPs will be elected for a term of four years.

More than 5,200 candidates had registered to compete for 290 seats.

Speaking at a press conference, Kadkhodaii also said that the extraordinary meetings of the council have started since a week ago and will continue up to February 10 when the final result of the vetting of candidates is announced.

He said that in total, the number of candidates, whose qualifications have been approved, has increased by about 17 percent compared with the last parliamentary election.

He went on to say that the qualifications of more than 2700 candidates, who account for 55 percent of total candidates, have been approved.

So far, the qualifications of 1200 candidates have been rejected, he said, adding that 333 candidates have also pulled out of the parliamentary race.
