PG missile shield plan will fuel regional tension

“The Islamic Republic of Iran will respond decisively and suitably and in proportion to any measure that is against its national interests,” Alaeddin Boroujerdi said on Sunday.

The lawmaker was alluding to new US proposal for the establishment of a missile defense shield in the Middle East to protect regional countries against the so-called Iran threat.

“For many years, the US has been tricking regional countries and blackmailing them by depicting Iran as a threat to the Middle East and has established many military bases in the region [using this method],” he said.

Boroujerdi stated that instead of giving military bases to the US, Arab states in the Persian Gulf should think about security arrangements involving regional states without any foreign intervention.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran, as one of the most powerful countries in the region will not accept foreign intervention in a region which belongs to all its littoral states,” he added.

The lawmaker said Washington has been promoting Iranophobia in the region for many years and has sold a great deal of weapons to regional countries because of this.

He said past experiences show that only countries which rely on their national capacities will have stability and security. Boroujerdi also advised regional Arab states to “pay attention to their own nations instead of paying millions of dollars to the US and raising controversial issues like [the establishment of] a missile shield.”
