Subsidy payment increase is illegal

The Majlis cannot agree with the plans which create “storm of inflation,” Larijani stated on Tuesday.

Larijani has also written a letter to the Supreme Leader about the implementation of the second phase of the subsidy reform plan, stating that the measure is in contravention of the law, the Persian service of the Fars News Agency reported on Tuesday.

Some of other MPs are concerned about a further increase in commodity prices that would make it difficult for the people to make ends meet after the Iranian New Year which has already started.

The second phase of “the targeting of subsidies plan” includes further subsidy cuts on fuel and utilities and a 20 percent increase in energy prices. Head of the Iranian parliament’s economic commission Gholamreza Mesbahi Moqaddam says that the plan does have the parliament’s approval but not in a way that the governments looks at it.

Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad calls the plan a major economic surgery and a necessity for Iran’s economy. The aim is to lift the burden of subsidies off the shoulders of the government and direct the cash towards infrastructural development projects as well as making life better for the poor families in Iran.

MPs believe that the psychological impact of an upcoming second phase will create a sudden price jump.
