Iranian lawmakers withdraw impeachment motion of labor minister

Twenty legislators had signed the impeachment motion of Sheikholeslami and presented it to the Majlis Presiding Board following his appointment of former Tehran prosecutor general Saeed Mortazavi as the director of the Social Security Organization.

Considering Mortazavi's approval to quit the post, the lawmakers that had signed the impeachment motion decided to withdraw their signatures, said Hossein Nejabat.

He added that the cancellation of the motion would be announced to the Majlis Presiding Board via a formal letter.

Under the Iranian Constitution, members of the Majlis can impeach an individual minister in instances they deem necessary. Impeachment can be submitted if it bears the signatures of at least 10 lawmakers.

Mortazavi has been accused of involvement in the incidents at the Kahrizak detention center in the post-2009 election unrest that led to the death of three detainees.

In December 2009, a statement from the Judicial Organization for the Armed Forces announced that, according to forensic information, three of those detained during the country's post-election events died while being held at the Kahrizak facility.
