US troops' withdrawal turning point in recent Iraqi developments

“The withdrawal of the US military forces from Iraq is the turning point of the recent developments and the foundation for the country’s long-term political independence,” Boroujerdi said at his meeting with Chairman of the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq (ISCI) Ammar Hakim in the Iraqi capital city, Baghdad.

The Iranian legislator underscored the importance of national unity and integrity in Iraq as the major pillar of the country’s authority.

Hakim, for his part, expressed gratitude for the cooperation and assistance offered by Iran after the downfall of executed Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein’s authoritarian regime.

Boroujerdi, who heads a parliamentary mission from Iran, also met with Ibrahim al-Jaafari, the leader of the Iraqi National Alliance and the country’s former prime minister.

The Iranian lawmaker congratulated Iraq for assuming the presidency of the Arab League (AL) and pointed to the upcoming meeting of Iran and six world powers in Baghdad as a sign of Iraq’s outstanding role in the international arena.

Jaafari, for his part, praised Iran’s support for the Iraqi nation during its many years of struggles against Saddam’s regime.

He also expressed optimism that Iraq, as the rotating head of the Arab League, will assume an effective role in the settlement of the regional problems.
