In an interview with ICANA on Wednesday, Shafie said, "Since the very beginning of Pakistan's independence, Islamabad has always tried to maintain intimate relations with Riyadh and the new Pakistani prime minister will continue to do so."

"The main reason behind such close relations is to promote the idea of Wahhabism," he added.

"Many Pakistani scholars and clerics are invited annually to Saudi Arabia for education and when they return to their homeland, they start to preach Wahhabism and extremist ideas," he said.

"This has resulted in a situation in which the deepest layers of the Pakistani society, even the ordinary citizens, are being affected by the Wahhabism and fundamentalism," he concluded.
